WTF Is Adulting

A human social decision that has shaped the world

Hey there you digital traveler,

I’d like to welcome you to the land of adulting. A mystical land to learn about the things we were never taught.

Like taxes! Effective communication! The ins and outs of the corporate ladder! It can be overwhelming to suddenly have to take on all these responsibilities that we may have taken for granted when we were younger (I know I did). But fear not, my fellow adults. We're in this together.

In this blog, we'll explore some of the most essential skills and knowledge that every new adult should have in their toolkit.

From budgeting to relationships to self-care, we'll cover the basics of what it means to "adult" in today's world.

Why certain things are the way they are, like the 40-hour workweek.

As well as how adulting has allowed human societies to continue thriving on Earth.

So grab a cup of coffee (or your preferred beverage of choice) and let's dive in!

Adulting is a term that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It refers to the process of taking on the responsibilities and duties associated with being an adult.

When we are young, we often dream of the freedom and independence that comes with adulthood.

We imagine being able to do whatever we want, whenever we want, without any rules or restrictions. However, the reality of adulting is much different. It requires a great deal of hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. A LOT of sacrifice. Every day since we were released into the “real world” we are faced with opportunity costs.

Opportunity cost (as defined by Google) is a term used in economics to describe the cost of choosing one option over another.

It refers to the benefits that could have been gained from the next best alternative that is not chosen, given the finite resources that are available aka our time.

In other words, when you make a decision, the opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you could have chosen instead.

For example, if you have the option to go to a movie or attend a concert, but you choose to go to the movie, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment or experience you would have gained from attending the concert instead.

The same goes for working long hours or spending time with your family. Everything decision has a cost.

One of the biggest aspects of adulting is financial responsibility.

This means having a job or a source of income and using that money wisely to pay bills, save for the future, and cover unexpected expenses.

It also means understanding the basics of personal finance, such as budgeting, investing, and managing debt.

For something that has such a big impact on our adult lives, it’s amazing that we never learned any of this in school. I mean giving a basic understanding of investing or how to buy a house would’ve been nice.

Another aspect of adulting is taking care of oneself. This includes maintaining physical and mental health, practicing self-care, and developing healthy habits. It also means taking responsibility for one's own happiness and well-being, rather than relying on others to provide it.

This can be extensive and difficult to master. It is relative to our own upbringing with our family and community. But, luckily it is a skill that can be learned. Like anything - our happiness is all in the practice of repetition.

Adulting also involves managing relationships, whether they be with romantic partners, friends, or family members.

This means communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and setting healthy boundaries. It also means being able to make decisions and stand up for oneself, even when others may disagree or disapprove.

Overall, adulting is about taking ownership of one's life and responsibilities.

It requires a combination of practical skills, emotional intelligence, and personal growth. While it can be challenging at times, the rewards of adulting are many, including a sense of independence, accomplishment, and personal fulfillment.

The goal of this blog is to help get each of you get one step closer to becoming the adults you always wanted to be.

So if you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure about what it means to be an adult, fear not and know that you're not alone.

Adulting is a journey, and everyone experiences it differently. But with perseverance, self-awareness, a willingness to learn and grow, and reading this blog, you can navigate the challenges of adulting and create a fulfilling and meaningful life for yourself.
